U or je?

In Dutch you say je or u. Je is normal and friendly. U is polite and a bit more distant.

When do you say which?

  • You say je to friends, family and colleagues.
  • You say u at the town hall, the doctor and to older neighbours.
  • In a shop or café you hear both.

Zeg maar je

Sometimes someone says: zeg maar je. Then you may switch. This often happens with a new neighbour or colleague.
